The Art of the Hammam

The Ritual

Five movements, always in the same order. Nothing here is quick. That is the whole of it.

I

Steam

Warmth. Water. Preparation.

Heat opens the skin and slows the body. Nothing in the ritual works before this.

II

Cleanse

Béldi black soap.

An olive-based paste is applied to steamed skin and left to rest before it is worked away.

III

Exfoliate

Kessa and traditional exfoliation.

The woven glove lifts what the soap has loosened. The skin is left bare and warm.

IV

Purify

Ghassoul and mineral clays.

Clay quarried from Moroccan earth draws the skin clean without stripping it.

V

Nourish

Argan oils, botanical care and finishing rituals.

Oil is pressed into damp skin. The ritual closes slowly, never abruptly.

A private practice

You do not need a hammam to keep the ritual.

The sequence travels. Steam a bathroom with hot water. Give the soap its five minutes. Work the kessa in long strokes. Finish with clay, then oil. The order is the ritual — not the room.
